PRACTICE PROBLEMS AND HOMEWORK.
Unless I explicitly say it, these problems are not to hand in. Only for
practice. It is very important that you practice each
week. Don't fall
behind!
Chapter 2:
All the
problem in this chapter are good (including the
discussion problem on page 18). Test your knowledge using the starred
problem (2.6) on page 17. Make sure you can do these problems without
referring to the formulas.
Chapter 3:
3.1-3.4.
Take a look at the following graphical displays of data and see if the
use of area or volume is misleading (they may or may not be
misleading): graph1, graph2,
graph3,
graph4. Write up a short summary describing your
conclusions.
3.7, 3.8, 3.10, 3.11, 3.15(a) and (c), 3.16.
Challenge yourself by doing 3.17 and 3.18 . (I
mistakenly added 3.18...quiz 1 will not cover it.)
Discussion questions 1 and 2 are also challenging and good to discuss.
----------this covers the material for quiz 1------------------
3.5-3.11.
3.13, 3.14.
3.17.
Discussion question 2.
Chapter 5:
It looks like all these problems are good. I recommend doing them all!
The main challenge for these problems is setting up the problem
correctly. If your having trouble, try setting up the problem different.
Note: 5.7 and 5.8 are hard so don't get discouraged.
Note: The starred problems 5.38-5.43 are hard. Indeed more difficult
than the problems that will be on the midterm. Therefore, I wouldn't
worry too much about these unless you really wanted to test yourself.
I've got some requests for some more straight forward problems with
solutions. Here are some problems that I posted for another class. I
think they are good practice for the midterm:
Extra Problems 1.
Solutions.
Chapter 6:
6.1-6.4
6.6-6.11 (these are fundamental)
6.12-6.13 (these are bit harder. They require using both a binomial
formula and some probability rules)

1-----------------
Note: I posted a homework assignment to be handed in under the links
section of the main course web page.
Chapter 4:
4.1-4.5
Chapter 7:
7.1-7.8
Chapter 8:
8.4-8.9,
8.11-8.15, 8.17, 8.18, 8.19(a) and (b), 8.20-8.24, 8.28-8.34,
8.36, 8.37, 8.38.
Chapter 9:
9.11-9.15,
9.16-9.21
Chapter 10:
10.1-10.8,
10.11-10.14, 10.15-10.17
Chapter 11:
11.1-11.4,
11.5-11.12, 11.15-11.21, 11.26-11.28,
Chapter 12:
12.1-12.7,
12.11-12.16, 12.18-12.22, 12.24-12.28
