"Early work on order statistics: research and teaching"

I will use the general theme of order statistics to provide a context within which it is convenient to discuss several different but related aspects of Peter Hall's professional work. The aspects include research, PhD supervision and undergraduate teaching. This allows us to link some of Peter's early research on order statistics, particularly on extremes and regular variation, when he was starting to transition from working on probabilistic to statistical problems, my experience of being his PhD student and his lecturing to undergraduates, particularly in an honours course on order statistics given in 1982.
